Overview
A landmark millennium vintage of one of Bordeaux's five First Growths. The 2000 Château Haut-Brion is a blend of 51% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc from Pessac-Léognan. Exceptionally highly regarded and built for prolonged ageing, it has received 99 points from Robert Parker and 99 points from Jeff Leve, with recent assessments supporting cellaring well beyond 2060. This bottle is presented in its original presentation box.
Vintage
The 2000 growing season began mildly, followed by a very wet and hot spring and an exceptionally dry, scorching summer. Temperatures averaged 1.5°C above normal across the year. Hot and dry conditions continued through September, allowing the harvest to proceed in excellent conditions and contributing to a vintage renowned for both its symbolic date and exceptional quality.
Critic Reviews
99 Points — Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
Tasted February 2024
“Still young, yet it is impossible not to be awed by the wine. Intense, concentrated, complex, and filled with smoked, red fruits, charred wood, tar, spice, forest leaves, spice, and a farmers market of red berries, this is long, rich, mouth-coating and attention-seeking. At 24 years of age, this is only starting to display its greatness. Drink from 2024-2075.”
99 Points — Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
Tasted July 2016
Drinking Window: 2020–2060.
97 Points — Decanter
Tasted July 2023
Drinking Window: 2023–2060.
97 Points — Falstaff
Tasted November 2010
“Medium ruby, delicate ochre rim. Delicately savoury, nougat, very inviting, hints of tobacco. Taut tannins, firm, austere core, subtle hints of dark chocolate, fine acid structure, still very young overall, somewhat underdeveloped, shows good tannin bite: Please wait. Store for +50 years.”
Producer
The origins of Château Haut-Brion trace to 1525, when Jean de Pontac began establishing the vineyard in the Graves region. His descendants later produced the “New French Claret” that preceded the modern style of great Bordeaux red wine, and by 1660 the wine was being sold under the estate's own name. Haut-Brion went on to become one of Bordeaux's five First Growths and remains the only 1855 First Growth located outside the Médoc.
The estate also has a longstanding tradition of technical innovation. In 1961, Haut-Brion became the first of the great growths to use stainless steel fermentation vats and has continued its detailed selection of suitable clones for each grape variety grown at the estate.
