The 1999 Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz is a mature expression of one of Australia’s most historic and celebrated single-vineyard Shiraz wines.
Mount Edelstone, meaning “gemstone”, is sourced from an historic vineyard in Eden Valley planted in 1912. The dry-grown, ungrafted Shiraz vines are among Australia’s treasured old-vine plantings and produce wines renowned for their concentration, elegance and remarkable longevity.
The 1999 vintage now displays beautifully developed aromas of blackberry, plum and dark cherry alongside cedar, leather, tobacco, dried herbs, black pepper and earthy spice.
The palate is mature and complex, with dark fruit supported by fine, softened tannins and balanced acidity. Layers of leather, cedar, dried fruit, spice and savoury earthiness reflect more than two decades of bottle development, leading to a long and elegant finish.
Now over 25 years from vintage, the 1999 Mount Edelstone is a compelling choice for collectors seeking mature Australian Shiraz. Well-cellared bottles should be drinking beautifully now, although provenance and storage conditions are particularly important at this age.
