The 1999 Henschke Abbotts Prayer Merlot Cabernet is a rare and beautifully mature cool-climate Bordeaux-style blend from the Adelaide Hills, crafted by the iconic Henschke. Named after the historic Abbotts Flat region in Lenswood, this wine represents one of Henschke’s most elegant and refined red blends, combining Merlot richness with Cabernet structure and long-lived complexity.
Sourced from the elevated Lenswood vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, the wine reflects the region’s cool climate, extended growing season, and naturally high acidity, all of which contribute to finesse and longevity. The 1999 vintage produced wines of balance and classical structure, allowing Abbotts Prayer to age gracefully over more than two decades. Historical bottlings from this era included predominantly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc.
With significant bottle age, the wine now displays a deeply evolved bouquet of blackcurrant, plum, mulberry, dried herbs, cedar, cigar box, leather, and earthy spice. Subtle tertiary notes of tobacco leaf, forest floor, mocha, and savoury undergrowth emerge with air, adding further complexity and maturity.
The palate is medium- to full-bodied and finely composed, with softened tannins, integrated acidity, and a graceful, savoury finish. While the fruit has evolved from youthful richness into mature tertiary complexity, the wine retains freshness and structure, reflecting both the pedigree of the producer and the cool-climate origin.
Drinking beautifully now with careful decanting, well-stored bottles may continue to evolve over the coming years, though the wine is firmly within its ideal drinking window.
