The 1997 Penfolds RWT Shiraz is a rare and mature Barossa Valley Shiraz from the inaugural vintage of one of Penfolds' most prestigious wines. Originally known as RWT (Red Winemaking Trial), this wine was developed to showcase an alternative expression of Barossa Shiraz, emphasising elegance, aromatic complexity and French oak maturation rather than the powerful American oak influence traditionally associated with Penfolds Grange.
First produced in 1997 and later officially released in 2000, RWT has become one of Penfolds' most celebrated luxury Shiraz labels. The inaugural vintage holds particular significance for collectors, representing the beginning of an important chapter in Penfolds' winemaking history.
The 1997 vintage is now a fully mature expression, offering the potential for developed aromas of blackberry, dark plum and black cherry alongside cedar, leather, tobacco, liquorice and subtle earthy spice. Extended bottle maturation may have introduced additional complexity, including dried fruit, truffle and savoury nuances.
The palate is rich yet refined, with mature dark fruit supported by softened tannins and integrated French oak. Layers of plum, dark chocolate, spice and savoury complexity contribute to an elegant, lingering finish.
As the inaugural release of RWT, the 1997 vintage is particularly appealing to collectors of historic Penfolds wines. At nearly three decades old, bottle condition, provenance and storage history are especially important when assessing drinking quality and future cellaring potential.
