First released in 1959, Bin 28 was originally sourced from the Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley and has since evolved into a multi-regional expression that consistently delivers warm-climate generosity, structure and longevity. The 1996 vintage, now approaching three decades of age, offers a rare opportunity to experience Bin 28 at full maturity.
The 1996 growing season across South Australia was generally favourable, producing Shiraz with balanced ripeness, good natural acidity and sound tannin structure. These conditions allowed Bin 28 to develop depth and harmony while retaining the freshness required for extended ageing.
With time in bottle, the wine has evolved into a complex and savoury expression. The bouquet opens with mature aromas of dried blackberry, plum and mulberry, layered with notes of leather, cedar, tobacco leaf and earthy spice. Secondary nuances of dark chocolate, anise, mocha and dried herbs reflect both oak maturation and graceful bottle age.
On the palate, the 1996 Bin 28 is medium to full-bodied, supple and well-integrated. The tannins have softened into a fine, silky framework, supporting flavours of mature dark fruit, black tea, cocoa and savoury earth. A gentle line of acidity provides balance and lift, carrying the wine through a smooth, lingering finish marked by warmth and complexity.
