1996 Best's Great Western Thomson Family Shiraz 750ml
Low stock: 1 left
The exceptional and exquisite Best’s Great Western Thomson Family Shiraz stands as a significant Victorian legacy. Originally named the Thomson Centenary Shiraz, this wine made its debut in 1993 to commemorate a century of the Thomson family's presence in Great Western. It serves as a representation of Australia's heritage, featuring ancient genetic and pre-phylloxera vineyards, primarily sourced from 15 rows of Concongella clone shiraz vines planted by Henry Best in 1868.
These 150-year-old shiraz vines are cultivated without irrigation, maintaining yields at less than four tonnes per hectare, and undergo delicate hand-picking, selection, and sorting. The winemaking process involves open fermentation in small tubs, followed by maturation in new French oak (approximately 50%) and seasoned barrels for 18 to 24 months.
Crafted exclusively in the finest vintage years, the original 15 rows produce limited fruit, resulting in only 300 cases of this flagship wine released during successful years. Over the past two decades, only 11 vintages have been created.
This opulent and generous wine exhibits intense aromas of blackberry and roasted chestnut, complemented by cedary oak complexity, voluminous richness, and robust, gravelly tannins.

Tasting notes
Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, discreet ochre rim. Fine tobacco, a touch of leather, graphite and cedar, black cherries, and orange zest. Juicy, rich ripe cherries, elegant texture, full of finesse, lively acidity, silky, well-integrated tannins, chalky minerality. Outstanding!
