Overview
Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz is one of Australia's most important single-vineyard wines, produced entirely from the historic estate vineyard in Adelaide's eastern foothills. The 1993 release was only the eleventh vintage of this celebrated label, giving it particular historical and collector significance.
Historic Vineyard
Magill Estate was established by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold in 1844 and was the first vineyard planted by the Penfold family. The compact six-hectare vineyard is devoted entirely to Shiraz, with vines planted between 1951 and 1985. Its survival within metropolitan Adelaide makes it one of Australia's most distinctive historic vineyard sites.
Vintage
The season began with unusually wet and cool conditions before turning dry and warm through summer and autumn. Harvest took place later than usual, between 10 and 18 March 1993, with fruit quality described by the producer as exceptional.
Winemaking and Maturation
The wine was matured for 14 months in new American and French oak hogsheads. This traditional approach produced a full-bodied, single-vineyard Shiraz combining ripe fruit with integrated oak and savoury development.
Tasting Profile
Producer Tasting Note: Brick red in colour with good depth. The bouquet displays complex Shiraz fruit with elegant, well-integrated oak and barrel ferment characters as well as hints of white pepper and meaty aromas. The palate has sweet, ripe, rich fruit, especially evident on the mid-palate, and shows a touch of vanillin oak. Traditional and full bodied in style, the wine has plenty of flavour with some interesting gamey and leather characters beginning to develop.
