The 1992 Best’s Great Western Thomson Family Shiraz is a rare and distinguished example of long-lived Australian Shiraz, drawn from one of the country’s most historic vineyard holdings. Produced by Best's Wines, the Thomson Family Shiraz represents the pinnacle of the estate’s old-vine Shiraz program, sourced from some of the oldest continually producing Shiraz vines in the world, originally planted in the 1860s.
The Great Western region’s continental climate and ironstone-rich soils deliver Shiraz of firm structure, savoury depth, and exceptional longevity. The 1992 vintage has rewarded extended bottle ageing, allowing the wine to evolve slowly and gracefully while retaining balance and vitality.
Now fully mature, the wine displays a complex and evocative bouquet of dried blackberry, plum, and black cherry, layered with classic tertiary characters of leather, earth, dried herbs, spice, and subtle game. With time in the glass, notes of ironstone, graphite, and gentle smoky nuance emerge, reflecting both vineyard heritage and long bottle evolution.
The palate is medium- to full-bodied, savoury and composed, with resolved yet still present tannins providing structure and length. Fruit sweetness has softened into tertiary complexity, supported by balanced acidity and a long, dry, harmonious finish. This is a wine that speaks quietly but confidently of provenance, patience, and traditional Australian winemaking.
Drinking beautifully now, the 1992 Thomson Family Shiraz should be handled gently, with careful decanting to remove sediment. While at peak maturity, well-stored bottles may continue to hold for several more years.
