First released in 1960, Penfolds Bin 389 — often called “Baby Grange” — is one of Australia’s most iconic and collectible red wines. Crafted by legendary winemaker Max Schubert, it marries the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the opulence of Shiraz, matured in barrels that once held Grange. Over the decades, Bin 389 has become a benchmark for age-worthy Australian blends.
Vintage
The 1991 vintage was a standout year across South Australia, delivering low yields, concentrated fruit, and superb balance. It produced reds of depth and longevity — among the finest Bin 389s of the early 1990s.
Winemaking
Sourced from multiple premium South Australian regions including the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra, the wine was matured in seasoned American oak hogsheads previously used for Grange. The result is a seamless integration of rich fruit, structure, and savoury complexity that continues to evolve beautifully in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Now over three decades old, the 1991 Bin 389 reveals layers of mature dark plum, cassis, cedar, and mocha, with secondary notes of leather, tobacco leaf, and dried herbs.
