Widely regarded as one of the benchmark Chardonnays of the New World, the Art Series has long set the standard for Margaret River Chardonnay. More than three decades on, the 1989 vintage stands as a remarkable example of longevity, complexity, and the extraordinary ageing potential of great Australian Chardonnay.
Vineyard and Winemaking
Fruit was sourced from Leeuwin Estate’s original vineyards in Margaret River, where gravelly loam soils and maritime influence provide ideal conditions for Chardonnay. Hand-harvested fruit was whole-bunch pressed and fermented in French oak barriques, followed by extended lees maturation to build complexity, texture, and longevity. This classical approach established the framework for one of Australia’s most enduring white wine styles.
Tasting Notes
Now at full maturity, the wine reveals an evolved bouquet of preserved lemon, toasted brioche, roasted hazelnut, honey, and subtle flint. Layers of beeswax, citrus marmalade, and savoury complexity unfold with air. The palate is textured and harmonious, with tertiary richness balanced by lingering acidity and mineral drive. The finish is long, savoury, and deeply complex, carrying the hallmarks of mature fine Chardonnay.
