The 1986 Henschke Hill of Grace is a profoundly rare and historically significant expression of one of Australia’s most revered single-vineyard wines. Hill of Grace, sourced from the ancient, low-yielding “Grandfathers” vines in the Eden Valley — some dating back to the 1860s — has long been celebrated for its ethereal depth, aromatic complexity and ability to age gracefully for generations. The 1986 vintage is widely regarded as one of the finest of the decade, offering both concentration and extraordinary elegance.
The 1986 season in the Eden Valley delivered ideal ripening conditions: warm, dry weather with cool nights that preserved acidity and aromatic lift. These conditions allowed the old-vine Shiraz to develop superb tannin maturity and profound fruit intensity while maintaining the refined structure that defines the Hill of Grace style.
More than three decades on, the 1986 Hill of Grace has evolved into a masterpiece of tertiary complexity. The bouquet is captivating and layered, opening with aromas of blackberry, mulberry and plum compote, now interwoven with notes of leather, cedar, dried rose, forest floor and tobacco. Hints of five-spice, cured meat, anise, dark chocolate and earthy minerality add depth and nuance.
On the palate, the wine is silken, savoury and remarkably harmonious. The once-vibrant dark fruit has softened into a tapestry of dried berries, spice and umami richness. Fine, resolved tannins create a seamless texture, while a gentle line of acidity sustains freshness.
