Vineyard
Bin 128 is sourced primarily from Coonawarra vineyards, where rich red terra rossa soil and a temperate climate deliver structured, medium-bodied Shiraz with distinctive regional character. Unlike the richer styles of Barossa, Coonawarra Shiraz expresses lifted spice, fine tannins, and restrained power.
Vintage
1985 was a solid vintage across South Australia, benefiting from a cool, even growing season. In Coonawarra, the conditions produced wines with vibrant fruit, balanced acidity, and excellent structure for aging. Nearly four decades on, this vintage represents a rare chance to experience a mature Bin 128 at its peak.
Tasting Notes
The 1985 Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz pours with a garnet core and brick-red rim, typical of well-aged Shiraz. Aromas of leather, cedar, dried herbs, and blackberry compote mingle with earthy spice and hints of tobacco. The palate is elegant and savoury, showing softened tannins, black fruit, pepper, and subtle oak integration. A long, graceful finish lingers with spice and warmth, reflecting both Coonawarra terroir and Penfolds’ hallmark style.
Critics’ Acclaim
While not formally reviewed in recent years, Bin 128 is recognised as one of Penfolds’ longest-running and most collectible Coonawarra Shiraz labels. The 1985 is considered a rare and mature expression, appealing to enthusiasts of aged Australian classics.
