Known for the elusiveness of its wines in the marketplace, the winery has cult status with the portfolio only released to an exclusive mailing list. The Wendouree property is more than 100 years old and its current owners, Tony and Lita Brady, have run the estate since 1974. The original stone winery at the estate is still used for production and Wendouree's 12 hectare (30 acre) vineyard is planted to old vine Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Mataro, and Muscat of Alexandria – most of which was planted in the late 1890s to early 1900s. The Wendouree vineyard is dry farmed and grapes are handpicked. In the winery, wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts in open-top, stainless-steel fermenters. Post-ferment, French oak barrels are sourced for aging for up to 12 months. The winery produces around 2000 cases annually of varietal and blended wines including Shiraz Mataro, Shiraz Malbec, and Cabernet Malbec.

Drinking Window: 2022-2032

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0839/1540/7675/files/WendoureeShiraz750ml_1_bc67bd50-41c9-4e2a-866d-f002d5d74d04.png?v=1784077948
2018-bass-phillip-premium-pinot-noir-750ml
2018 Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir 750ml

The idiosyncratic, biodynamic and greatly admired Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir, aged in French Allier barriques for 18 months, is a defining Victorian pinot noir. Its beginnings can be traced back to Ronald Angas' initial plantings in 1912, likely sourced from William Gilbert at Pewsey Vale Station. Due to quarantine laws in 1899, the use of existing state materials was mandated. Cultivated on the original pre-phylloxera vines, thriving in sandy loam and gravelly clay, this 16-hectare vineyard adopts biodynamic practices. The inaugural Claret was crafted by Cyril Henschke in 1952, and the family acquired the vineyard in 1974, dedicating efforts to enhance soil and vine health. With a legacy spanning over 60 vintages, this Shiraz encapsulates the floral essence and unique terroir of Eden Valley. A full-bodied wine, there are generous blueberry and blackberry flavours, as well as dark, chocolate, coffee and licorice that fill the mid-palate. Red and black fruit, something of an aniseed pastille thing here too, some floral notes, tobacco, cedar, and baking spice. It’s medium-bodied, kind of svelte and evenly weighted, just a little toasty oak, with some black olive and nori savoury elements. the tannin is quiet, and kind of latent, but swish it about in your mouth a bit, and their quality is revealed, especially on the long finish. The process was as careful as possible, without using any bombs, doing manual and optical sorting of the grapes, pressing in small vertical presses and aging of 20 months in French oak barrels, 73% of them new and the rest second use. The wine reached good ripeness with 14.9% alcohol. It still shows the effect of the élevage a bit, with abundant notes of sweet spices, a creamy touch and some smoke. I tasted it next to the 2019, and the wines have a very similar aromatic palette with a clear note of baked peppers. What was amazing in 2020 was that they harvested the Carmenere almost five weeks earlier than they normally would, and the result is not a green wine at all. As in all dry years, the wines show a little more tannic, a little in the style of the 2017—but the 2020 has more tension than the 2017, and the 2017 was more powerful and with a bigger tannic structure. The 2019 had more volume than the 2018, and the 2020 is closer to the 2019 than the 2018. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled during the second half of February 2022. The ancient vine roots are anchored deep into the quartz stone rich loam soils which provide a consistent source of sub surface moisture that assists with maintaining vine health and promoting even ripening. During late January to March in the lead up to harvest, gully breezes rise up from the Valley floor to cool the canopy. This element, combined with a ridge line to the west which protects the vines from the late afternoon sun, prolongs ripening and enables the fruit to achieve a remarkable level of flavour intensity, whilst retaining good natural acidity. Dry grown, the old vines yield a small crop of compact bunches of densely flavoured berries, cementing this site’s reputation as an exceptional Barossa Valley vineyard, and the source of an iconic Australian Shiraz.

The preceding 2016 winter and spring was one of the wettest on record. The resulting wet soils, combined with a cooler than average spring and early summer meant the vines grew slowly but healthily with excellent canopy development and good bunch weight/numbers. Barossa experienced generally average temperatures through summer, and March saw the beginning of an Indian summer, which lasted until late April when most of the fruit for Greenock Creek was harvested. This was perfect for consistent ripening of grapes, with good colour development and natural acidity being retained.

The fruit was hand-picked and fermented in open slate fermenters for 6-7 days before the wine was transferred to 100% American oak (20% new) for two years. In the Penfolds tradition of trial and innovation our winemakers embarked on a project in 1995 titled 'RWT' - meaning 'Red Winemaking Trial' - to create a new Australian Shiraz integrating the rich, generous flavours of Barossa Valley Shiraz with the finesse of tightly-grained French oak. The result is a fine wine of great elegance and depth of flavour. RWT is second only to Grange in the Penfolds Shiraz hierarchy, although the two wines are stylistically different. RWT expresses Shiraz more openly than Grange. This is partly a function of the grapes themselves and partly a result of maturation in French oak, rather than stronger, sweeter-flavoured American oak. Since 1994, they have remained committed to creating exceptional Rhone-style red and white wines that reflect the very best vineyards in Australia's famous Barossa region. Provenance is everything to them, and they believe that the Barossa is the most exciting place to make wine in the world. With a European sense of tradition, Torbreck pays tribute to the vineyards with minimal intervention, creating wines of richness, structure and length that age gracefully. The multi-generational growers, whose descendants arrived here nearly two centuries ago, are the backbone of Torbreck's winemaking aspirations. They work in partnership with the people of the Barossa who grow their fruit, always aiming to get the very best out of their vineyard sites. At Torbreck, they constantly seek to understand the difference between all of these special places in the Barossa and how this combination of soil, climate and farming experience is reflected in unique grape flavors. They are simply custodians, enhancing the innate expressiveness of the wines and enabling them to reveal over time their individual origins and personality. Torbreck is actually named after the forest near Inverness, Scotland where the winery's founder, David Powell worked as a lumberjack after completing university studies.

The winemaking style at Torbreck is meticulous and dedicated to producing exceptional wines. They use carefully selected 225-litre oak barriques for maturation, known as Dominique Laurent 'Magic Casks'. The oak is personally harvested from Forêt de Tronçais in Allier, and the staves are aged for 48 to 54 months at an exposed location for maximum seasoning. The staves are then hand-made into barrels and heated over three differing flames for several hours, resulting in a gentle toast due to the remarkable density of the wood. Torbreck's winemaking style reflects their commitment to producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Barossa region.

The Torbreck RunRig Shiraz is a wine that pays homage to the Highland clans "RunRig" system of communal land distribution. This system emphasized the communal element of the whole rather than any one farm, and the RunRig Shiraz embodies this philosophy by blending Shiraz from old dry-grown vineyards with Viognier to complement the strengths and complexities of each individual parcel of fruit, giving the wine a further dimension. The resulting wine has often drawn comparisons with the beautifully fragrant and tautly structured wines produced from the steep slopes of the Northern Rhône Valley's Appellation of Côte Rôtie. With this wine, Torbreck has created a true masterpiece that embodies the spirit of community and the beauty of the land.

TOP VINTAGES

2015, 2014, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2002, 2001, 1998, 1996, 1995.
