Indeed, our vineyards cover around 10 acres in the heart of the appellation. We pay particular attention to the vine in order to express the maximum of the terroir. The vineyard is handled by Axelle Courdurié, as a small diamond, from pruning to the harvest, the vinification and ageing with the guidance of the team of Michel Rolland and Hubert de Bouard. Very mindful of detail, accuracy Axelle brings her feminine sensitivity to all our wines from Croix de Labrie. The plots are located on Badon (near Pavie), St. Sulpice (beside the first parcel of Valandraud) and Saint Christophe des Bardes, on the famous plateau with arteries limestones, beside our cellar (dating from 1687). The terroir of Badon is composed of sand and clay with a basement limestone. Soil drainage, brings us finesse. The St. Sulpice compound is serious with clays which cause more depth and density. And finally, the plateau, Saint Christophe des Bardes on clay-arteries limestone soil bringing complexity and density. The vines are more than 90 % Merlot, we have a few rows of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Château Croix de Labrie (90 % Merlot 7% Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Cabernet Franc) produces about 850 to 1000 cs. Château Croix de Labrie is part of the Grand Vin de Bordeaux and is now considered as one of the rarest and one of the great wines of Bordeaux and Saint-Emilion with Ausone, Angelus, Cheval Blanc, Canon, La Mondotte, Pavie, Valandraud. Rare and unique wines of Château Croix de Labrie are rich, dense, very fruity, with perfect ripeness. A very elegant very deep color, with lots of finesse. Founded in the 17th century, it earned the moniker "The King's Wine" at Versailles. In 1787, American Founding Father Thomas Jefferson acquired a passion for the wines of Lafite upon visiting Bordeaux whilst serving as America's ambassador. He composed a list classifying what he considered to be the top wines of the Médoc, including Château Lafite with Château Margaux, La Tour Segur and Haut-Brion with remarkable accuracy; 75 years later, Lafite was one of the four château to be ranked as first growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Yet a fine vintage it was: excellent spring weather followed by a dry summer with occasional light rain, led to a very abundant, high-quality yield. The wines are almost black in colour, very concentrated without being heavy, with distinguished, dominant tannins.

Bud break was late, but the vines caught up thanks to May and June, and hotter, drier weather until early September, when rain arrived to help a somewhat complicated start to the ripening process - however, there was less rain in Pauillac than in the rest of the Bordeaux region where rainfall was very heavy. This was followed by a period of fine weather. Ripening levels were excellent, with the right amount of moisture and steady sunshine until the end of the harvests.

Pauillac is located on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, approximately 40km North of Bordeaux. Today the nose is not really closed, but still rather restrained. All the aromas are there, but a bit masked. As I indicated last year, only 38% of the crop was deemed grand enough to be put into the final blend, which is atypically high in Cabernet Sauvignon (83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaled Lafite I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around, so I suspect all of us past the age of fifty might want to give serious consideration as to whether we should be laying away multiple cases of this wine. It is also the first Lafite Rothschild to be put into a new engraved bottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wine exhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose of lead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremely powerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yet has managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. This wine is even richer than it was prior to bottling. It should unquestionably last for 40-50 years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050.
