What a fitting wine for Nick’s mum. It’s regal, not that Robyn would want that type of characterisation, but she is and so is the wine. I tasted a wine blind last week that Nick sent me and I starting talking about the fruit profile. He then asked about tannin ripeness, which I had overlooked entirely. Fruit expression, house style, physiological ripeness (the tannin thing he asked me about) is all resolved, all fully formed and ready. The acid line works more like a Soprano, balancing and thrilling us. The fruit expression just right, dark Xmas cherries, bags of spice and tang and ripe lickable tannins. Remember the bit about hyperbole I mentioned earlier? There’s no basic way to describe these wines, not because these are flavours that don’t exist in wine, but because it’s just so hard to fit them all in to one wine, with the structure just right and the oak there, but not there at all. - Ben Knight (For Nick Farr)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0839/1540/7675/files/2022ByFarrPinotNoir750ml_33eae8fa-fca0-40b4-8c64-ab823d5e5233.png?v=1781241425
1995-bass-phillip-estate-pinot-noir-750ml
1995 Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir 750ml

"From the original Estate vineyard; 8,500 vines/hectare; specific plot cropping at approx. one tonne/acre, often blended with the best fruit from our Leongatha Vineyard."

Formerly labelled as 'Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir'

Winemaking

The wine is vinified in an open stainless steel fermenter with regular plunging to extract colour and flavour. There is a light charred oak note present, easily confused with toasted almonds. Flowery scents like cherry blossom, violets and Christmas lilies are combined with plums, boysenberry and liquorice. Immediately the nose reveals this to be a serious wine: very coherent with rapidly expanding boundaries bringing aromatic volume. The palate, too, has an escalating horizon and an inflating edge; it's simply delicious, with well-rounded tannins. Initially there is a juicy, plush elegance, with the tannins claiming a more authoritative and luxurious presence, showing off its class and flamboyance. The mid-palate brings the wine back to earth with grounding acidity that reigns the wine in again without overpowering the fruit weight. It is just enough to bring life again to the floral and lighter fruit aromatics, to highlight the central core and to show the length and smooth finish on the back palate.

97 points Rebecca Gibb MW vinous.com Mar 2021 Drink 2021 - 2030

Smoky, savoury, lots of pure red berry fruits aromas, clove and baking spices, roses and silty soil scents; complex.
